HE CONTENT-AWARE MOVE TOOL
works best with natural backgrounds,
such as grass and landscapes. However, it
is capable of working with straight lines –
as long as you’re prepared to put in some
experimentation.
The tool also works remarkably well with
cutouts. It has the ability to smooth out joins,
not just within the selected area, but outside
it as well, and this makes it unique among
Photoshop tools. It all comes down to the
choice of Adaptation method, as we’ll see.

In this example we’ll move the window from the right to
a position further over to the left of the roof. We’ll start by
selecting the whole window, including a small amount of roof
around it.
6
With the Adaptation method set to Medium, we can see
that the chimney blends in reasonably well – but a chunk
of misplaced roof texture has appeared where the old chimney
used to be.
5
Here, we’ll move the chimney from its position on the roof
further towards the middle. Once again, we can begin by
making a selection around it with the Content-Aware Move
Tool, taking in a little sky as well.
10
With the Adaptation method set to Medium,
the horse is fairly neatly extended. Not only has
the texture blended together, but the outline has been
reshaped smoothly. There’s a piece of leg left behind, but
this is easily removed.
9
The process works well with cutout objects, such as this
horse. Here, we’ll use the Content-Aware Move Tool set to
Extend mode to make this horse longer.
