HE CONTENT-AWARE MOVE TOOL
works best with natural backgrounds,
such as grass and landscapes. However, it
is capable of working with straight lines –
as long as you’re prepared to put in some
experimentation.
The tool also works remarkably well with
cutouts. It has the ability to smooth out joins,
not just within the selected area, but outside
it as well, and this makes it unique among
Photoshop tools. It all comes down to the
choice of Adaptation method, as we’ll see.
1
In this example we’ll move the window from the right to
a position further over to the left of the roof. We’ll start by
selecting the whole window, including a small amount of roof
around it.
6
With the Adaptation method set to Medium, we can see
that the chimney blends in reasonably well – but a chunk
of misplaced roof texture has appeared where the old chimney
used to be.
5
Here, we’ll move the chimney from its position on the roof
further towards the middle. Once again, we can begin by
making a selection around it with the Content-Aware Move
Tool, taking in a little sky as well.
10
With the Adaptation method set to Medium,
the horse is fairly neatly extended. Not only has
the texture blended together, but the outline has been
reshaped smoothly. There’s a piece of leg left behind, but
this is easily removed.
9
The process works well with cutout objects, such as this
horse. Here, we’ll use the Content-Aware Move Tool set to
Extend mode to make this horse longer.

HOT TIP
Using the Content-
Aware Move Tool
is a hit-and-miss
process, which
can sometimes
produce great
results and
sometimes
disastrous ones
– even on the
same image. It can
be a great time-
saver, and it can
be frustrating in
equal measure. It
does have trouble
with perimeter
detail: in the
second example
on this page, there
was no way to
remove the blue
sky halo around
the chimney pot
selection.
2
We can choose the Adaptation
method from the pop-up menu in the
Options bar. Set to the default of Medium,
the window is slightly distorted.
3
Changing the Adaptation method
to Very Strict means that the
window itself is undistorted. But the join
with the roof isn’t as good.
4
When the method is set to Very
Loose, the window blends in better
with the roof line. But at a cost: the
window itself is now too wavy.
7
Changing the Adaptation method to Very Loose smoothes
out the old roofline, patching it so that theres now no
trace of the original chimney. It is, however, slightly more
wiggly than wed like.
8
Changing the method back to Medium this time loses
that misplaced texture. That’s because the Content-
Aware technology includes a random process; each time it’s
performed, it’s slightly different.
11
With the Adaptation method set to Very Strict, we can
see that while the interior of the horse blends in well,
the outline has not been allowed to deform much. This results
in a double-hump effect.
12
When the Adaptation method is set to Very Loose,
the back of the horse is much smoother. But,
unaccountably, the original front legs remain. The Content-
Aware Move tool can be very unpredictable!
