E’VE SEEN HOW
we can create 3D
text objects, and adjust both
their position and their shape.
Here, we’ll look at how to
change the lighting on an
object – which affects the
shadow as well, of course – as
well as looking at applying
textures.
What’s particularly
interesting is that you’re now
able to edit 3D text, even
after you’ve extruded it, and
added bevels and textures.
In fact, you can now modify
the outline used to create any
extruded object.
3D layers: texture and more
1
Click the tiny Light icon near the edge of the
canvas to activate the Lighting control. It
appears as a shaded ball with a pin sticking out
of it. The pin indicates the direction the light is
coming from: drag to move it around the object,
and see how the shadow moves with it.

Here’s the model with the Orange Peel
texture applied just to the Bevel. You can see
that the sides (the Extrusion Material) and the face
(the Inflation Material) are both just the original
color, and have had no texture applied yet.
2
You can add extra lights in the Light section
of the 3D panel, and vary their intensity using
the straightforward controls. If you don’t want
your objects to either cast shadows or receive
those cast by other objects, turn off the feature
using the checkbox in the Properties panel.
6
The ability to apply textures to different parts
of the object means that we can create rich,
complex-looking extrusions. We can also use our
own textures: double-click any of them in the
Layers panel to open them in a new window, and
paste your chosen texture in. When you Save the
.psb window, you’ll see it on your model.
