E’VE SEEN HOW
we can create 3D
text objects, and adjust both
their position and their shape.
Here, we’ll look at how to
change the lighting on an
object – which affects the
shadow as well, of course – as
well as looking at applying
textures.
What’s particularly
interesting is that you’re now
able to edit 3D text, even
after you’ve extruded it, and
added bevels and textures.
In fact, you can now modify
the outline used to create any
extruded object.
3D layers: texture and more
1
Click the tiny Light icon near the edge of the
canvas to activate the Lighting control. It
appears as a shaded ball with a pin sticking out
of it. The pin indicates the direction the light is
coming from: drag to move it around the object,
and see how the shadow moves with it.
5
Heres the model with the Orange Peel
texture applied just to the Bevel. You can see
that the sides (the Extrusion Material) and the face
(the Inflation Material) are both just the original
color, and have had no texture applied yet.
2
You can add extra lights in the Light section
of the 3D panel, and vary their intensity using
the straightforward controls. If you don’t want
your objects to either cast shadows or receive
those cast by other objects, turn off the feature
using the checkbox in the Properties panel.
6
The ability to apply textures to different parts
of the object means that we can create rich,
complex-looking extrusions. We can also use our
own textures: double-click any of them in the
Layers panel to open them in a new window, and
paste your chosen texture in. When you Save the
.psb window, you’ll see it on your model.

To apply textures, first click the
Materials button in the 3D panel
to switch to that section. Select the part
you want to apply the texture to – the
diagram above shows which name
relates to each part of the object.
4
Double-click each material in the
3D panel to open the Materials in
the Properties panel. Click the sample
to pop up a scrolling list of all that’s
available. You can also download more
textures from the Adobe website.
7
At the bottom of the Properties panel, in the Text section
(see step 2) you’ll see three buttons. Clicking the Text swatch
allows you to change the color of the text; click the Character
Panel button to change the font, as seen above.
But you can also rewrite the text itself. Click the Edit Source
button to open the text in a new .psb window, as seen on the left.
When you Save this window, the text will appear on your object.
HOT TIP
At any point in
the construction
of your model,
you can choose
3D > Render and
Photoshop will
take several passes
to smoothe out
the edges and
shadows. You
can interrupt
the process at
any stage just by
clicking. If you
make a selection
first, Photoshop
will render just
that area – very
useful to quickly
get an idea of
how the finished
artwork will look.
