For this lesson, let’s use the Rock genre.
5 Double-click the Rock genre icon to open that project.
After a moment The Magic GarageBand stage appears along with the
default instruments used in the song.
Navigating and Controlling Playback
Now that you’ve opened a Magic GarageBand project, it’s a good idea to learn
how to navigate your way around a song and control playback.
If you already completed the Learn to Play exercises in Lesson 11, you’ll see
some familiar features in the Control bar at the bottom of the window. If you
skipped ahead to this lesson, no problem; you’ll be acquainted with the con-
trols soon.
1 Click the Play button in the Control bar to play the song.

The music plays in its default arrangement. You can use the volume slider
if you need to increase the song’s volume temporarily.
2 Press the spacebar to pause playback.
3 Press Return to move the playhead back to the beginning of the song.
Each Magic GarageBand song includes an Intro, two Verses, a Chorus, and
an Ending. You can quickly navigate to the beginning of one of these sec-
tions by clicking the corresponding part above the Control bar.
4 Click Verse 1 to select that section of the song.
The selected section turns yellow, and the playhead jumps to the begin-
ning of that section.
5 Press the spacebar or click the Play button to start playback again.
Notice that this time the playback includes only the selected snippet of the
song. This feature comes in really handy if you want to practice or play
along with just one part of the song at a time.
6 Click the Snippet/Entire Song switch to set it back to Entire Song and
pause playback.
The yellow highlighted section of the song disappears, and the entire song
plays again.
You can also play the project full screen by clicking the small View button
in the lower-right corner of the stage.
You can click the View button again at any time to return to the
window view.
