312 If Seeing Is Believing: Working with Audio
Adding a Voiceover
Some movies may benefit from incorporating narration or commentary that
you record during the editing process. iMovie has a built-in recording tool to
help you make such recordings and integrate them seamlessly into your movie.
NOTE
In order to do the following exercise, you need to have a built-in
microphone on your Mac, or have an external mic attached via the Audio
In jack.
1 Click the Voiceover button or press O.
The Voiceover inspector opens. In order to begin recording a voiceover
you want to first make sure the microphone is working and recording a
good level.
2 Set the Record From menu to Built-in Microphone if you’re using the
built-in mic, or to Built-in Input if you’re using an external mic.
3 Count to ten and watch the audio meters to ensure that youre getting a
clear level.

If the audio meters are showing red, your input is too loud. If
youre just seeing a few bars of green, your input is too soft.
4 Adjust the Input Volume slider if necessary to get a good level.
5 Practice reading the text in step 7 a few times before you begin recording.
6 Click the clip in the project showing the close-up of the horn players.
iMovie counts down from three, and when it finishes, youre live!
