Most video hobbyists don’t appreciate the importance of sound, so they
put most of their emphasis on how things look—after all, sound is liter-
ally invisible. But that doesnt mean it’s not a critical component of a
finished movie.
In some ways, having a quality audio track may be even more impor-
tant than having great visuals. Although the picture contains the infor-
mation (who, what, where, and so on), it’s the sound that conveys the
emotional tone (how someone is feeling, the musical vibe, and so on).
Or put another way, if seeing is believing, then hearing is feeling.
Good audio starts during shooting. If you don’t record your audio prop-
erly, it’s nearly impossible to magically restore it while editing. However,
iMovie does provide a wide range of powerful and flexible audio tools to
help you make the most of whatever you have recorded. And like the rest
of the program, those tools are both easy and fun to use.
Your camera is always recording sound, so virtually all of your footage
will have an audio track running alongside the video. When you edit
pieces of that footage into a project, you can choose which parts of
