354 Jamming with a Virtual Band
Adding an Instrument
Unlike the specified instrument choices for the other parts of the song, an
advantage of your instrument part is that you can choose from any sound
available in GarageBand. In this exercise, you’ll customize the choice and add
a new sound that you can play on your computer keyboard, or with an exter-
nal MIDI keyboard.
1 Click the Tuner button again to see the My Instrument keyboard instru-
ment list.
2 Click the Customize button.
The Instrument Menu appears, showing all of the available Pianos and
Keyboards instruments. Your instrument list may have fewer instruments
than the one shown, which includes sounds from Jam Pack: World Music.
For this exercise, let’s choose an interesting Synth Pad to add some elec-
tronic ’80s texture to this Rock song.
3 Click the Pianos and Keyboards menu header to see a full list of Software
Instrument categories.
4 Choose Synth Pads from the Instrument menu.
Adding an Instrument 355
5 Choose Falling Star from the Synth Pads instrument list. Then click Done
to hide the Instrument menu.
The Customize button is replaced by the Falling Star instrument in the list.
NOTE
You can click the (i) information button in the upper-right cor-
ner of the Falling Star icon to show the Instrument Menu and choose a
different customized instrument.
6 Click the Tuner button to turn on Musical Typing and play a few notes
along with the song. When you’re finished, stop playback.
The Falling Star sound is easy to work with—even if you aren’t a musician.
Sure, it isn’t a very good choice for showing off your finger work or com-
posing a keyboard solo, but it’s perfect for adding a little excitement to the
Intro and Ending of the song.
