280 Hollywood, Here I Come: Creating Visual Effects
Changing Clip Speed
You can also change a clip so it plays in fast motion or slow motion. This can
be a dramatic special effect when used with the right footage.
In this project, slowing down the speed on some of the shots of the dancers
can add a subtle magical quality to the shots, reinforcing the mythic aspect of
this ancient tribal ritual.
1 Position your pointer over the first shot of a single dancer (the twirl-
ing man in the red skirts). When the Action menu appears, choose Clip
Adjustments.
In the inspector, there’s a Speed slider with a tortoise on one side and a
hare on the other.
Dragging toward the tortoise will slow your shot down, and dragging
toward the hare will speed your shot up. You can also type a number
directly in the Speed Percentage field or in the Speed Duration field.
2 Drag the Speed slider toward the tortoise until the speed percentage
reads 50% and click Done.
Changing the speed of your clips automatically changes their
duration. If you had a five-second clip that you play at 50% speed, it’s
going to last ten seconds. You can always change the clip duration after
applying the speed effect by using any of the editing tools described in
Lesson 8.
