Adding a Cutaway 257
first section, and if you drop it near the end of the clip, the second part will be
shorter than the first.
Adding a Cutaway
Another way to add a clip in the middle of a shot thats already in your proj-
ect is to use a cutaway edit. A cutaway is different from an insert because it
covers up the footage in the project. Instead of your whole project getting
longer, it stays the same length. Also, a cutaway uses a second video track,
which makes it easy to move the shot around to fine-tune the timing after
you’ve made the edit.
In this project, the main focus is the festival performers, but in addition to
how remarkable the dancers and musicians are, the crowd in the stadium is
also somewhat unusual. By showing whos watching the show, you add to the
depth and complexity of the event and make a better movie.
Its also a great way to cover a mistake.
1 Play the project from the beginning.
After the close-up shot of the horn players, theres a pretty long shot of
dancers in blue and red costumes, and midway through, the shot briefly
goes out of focus.

2 In the Event Browser, find the shot of the group of monks in the stands.
3 Click the monks clip to select the shot and drag it right on top of the
blurry clip.
When you release the mouse button, the Edit Options menu appears.
4 Choose Cutaway.
The shot is added to the project on a new track, covering part of the
blurry dancers clip.
