260 The Cutting Edge: Advanced Editing Techniques
Replacing a Shot
Now that you’re getting the hang of all the different ways to add a clip to your
project, you can see just how versatile an editor iMovie really is. The one type
of edit you haven’t yet explored is replacing one shot with another.
iMovie has four different ways to replace a shot: Replace, Replace from Start,
Replace from End, and Replace at Playhead.
The basic replace means the clip in the project is simply exchanged with the
clip you drag from the Event Browser. If the new clip is shorter or longer, your
project gets shorter or longer to accommodate it.
The other replace methods always keep the duration of the clip being replaced.
If you drag a ten-second clip onto a five-second shot in the project, you’re only
going to get five seconds of your new shot in the project.

Which five seconds you end up with depends on which edit type you choose:
Replace from Start will use the first five seconds of your selection.
Replace from End will use the last five seconds of your selection.
Replace at Playhead will place the beginning of your selection precisely
where you dropped the clip. (So, in the figure above, frame 12 of the new
clip is placed where frame 8 of the old clip was, because that’s where the
pointer is.)
