Testing and Training

Quality, budget, and scope are the fundamental constraints on every ERP project. Most of the time, when the scope is increased and the budget stays the same, the quality gets compromised on. One of the biggest mistakes that people end up making is that they reduce the testing and training budget when there is budget pressure.

In many post-release, postmortem meetings, you would hear, If I was to do this again, I would spend a hundred thousand dollars more on testing. You have the opportunity to do it right and not regret it later.

In this chapter, we will cover the following for testing:

  • Importance of testing
  • Types of testing
  • Automated testing strategies
  • Test planning guidelines and recommendations

Similar to testing, training is another key aspect for the successful implementation of an ERP system. Ensuring that the users are comfortable with the new platform and understanding the new business processes and their role in the organization is essential for attaining a good working platform. Many a times in ERP implementation, users are not only dealing with system change, but also with process change. Training needs to be delivered to support this cultural shift.

The process of unlearning the old practices and learning new ways of doing things may take several iterations. Hence, training and an evaluation of adopting learnings of that training are very essential. We will discuss the following important aspects of training in this chapter:

  • Importance of training
  • Training and help system in Finance and Operations
  • Planning and executing training

While discussing this topic of testing and training, our focus will not be on generic areas; we will talk about them at a higher level and focus on the Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition-specific elements.
