Data management tools

Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations provides a comprehensive functionality within the application and LCS to manage the configuration and data migration process. Best practices from a systems' perspective are already baked into them, and hence, using these tools should be included in planning.

We are focusing on the tools available in Microsoft for Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition at the time of writing this book. Some of the capabilities shown in this section were introduced with the July 2017 release, with Platform update 9 of Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition. Functionalities may be different in other application and platform versions.

In Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, the implementation team can use various tools and frameworks for data management. The following image shows the different tools and frameworks available for data management in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations:

The data entity and packages framework is the primary and most useful tool to handle the various data management scenarios. This tool helps the implementation team to perform the initial data configuration, manage configuration data within the environment, copy the configuration across environments, and migrate the data from legacy systems. Database operations, such as backup, restore, and point-in-time restore, are another set of tools that can be used to quickly set up a new environment and to even move your final golden configuration environment to production for the first time. The cross-company data sharing tool can be used in an implementation scenario where multiple legal entities are involved in sharing common parameters and reference data, for easier and effective data management.

Now that we have introduced you to the various tool sets, let's explore these tool sets in detail in the subsequent sections.
