Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations comprises multiple applications, such as application object server, retail server, SQL server reporting services, and management reporter. Let's explore these components:

  • Application Object Servers (AOS): This provides the ability to run the Finance and Operations application functionality in client, batch, and import/export scenarios.
  • Retail Server: This provides stateless services and business logic for Retail Modern Point of Sale (MPOS) and e-commerce clients.
  • Management Reporter (MR): This provides the financial reporting functionality and also known as Financial Reports.
  • SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS): This provides the document reporting functionality.

In cloud deployment, these components are deployed and run on Azure compute VMs. The following diagram shows a logical view of the VMs deployed in the cloud deployment model:

In the local business data or on-premise deployment, all the application components are deployed using  Microsoft Service Fabric Standalone Clusters on the customer data center.

Service fabric is a next-generation Microsoft middleware platform for building and managing enterprise-class high-scale applications. Service fabric standalone clusters can be deployed on any computer that runs a Windows server.

On-premise deployment needs another component called Environment Orchestrator to enable the on-premise environment management from LCS. The following diagram shows the logical architecture of on-premise deployment:

At the time of writing this book, retail server is not supported in on-premise deployments.
