Controlling Macros, Add-Ins, and ActiveX Controls

Macros are programs you use to automate actions in other programs—repeating a series of commands, for example. Add-ins are programs or other items—more smart tags, for example—that you can add to your program to extend its capabilities. ActiveX controls are items that provide extra functionality—displaying special dialog boxes or toolbars, for example. Unfortunately, sometimes these items either are so poorly written that they cause operational problems or are written maliciously with the explicit intention of causing harm. To combat these risks, Word provides very strong protections against malfunctioning and malicious macros, add-ins, and ActiveX controls. However, these protections sometimes prevent good and effective tools from being used, so you might need to adjust your security settings to balance security and functionality.

Modify the Settings

  1. In Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, click the Office button, and click the program’s Options button on the menu. In the Options dialog box, click the Trust Center category in the left pane, and click the Trust Center Settings button to display the Trust Center dialog box. In Outlook and Publisher, choose Trust Center from the Tools menu.

  2. Click the Add-Ins category, and select this check box if you want to require that all add-ins come from a trusted source. Each time an add-in from another source tries to be used, you’ll be asked whether you want to use it.

  3. In Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, click the ActiveX Settings category, and select the level of security you want for ActiveX controls.

  4. Select this check box if it isn’t already selected.

  5. Click the Macro Settings category, and select the level of security you want for macros.

  6. Click any categories that are specific to the program, and make the changes you want.

  7. Click OK to close the Trust Center dialog box, and, in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, click OK again to close the Options dialog box.
