Fixing Office

Although the Microsoft Office programs are robust programs, once in a while things can go wrong. Sometimes a problem might be severe enough to cause your computer to crash—that is, to shut down. This type of problem might be caused by a program or a support file on your hard disk being corrupted, or there might be something wrong with your computer itself. When any Office component isn’t working properly, you can run a series of diagnostic tests to find out what’s wrong and, usually, learn how to fix the problem, unless Office fixes it automatically.

Run the Diagnostics

  1. Close any running programs except for a single blank Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file.

  2. Click the Office button, click the program’s Options button on the menu to display the program’s Options dialog box, and click the Resources category. Click the Diagnose button to display the Microsoft Office Diagnostics Wizard.

  3. Click Run Diagnostics, and wait for the series of diagnostic tests to be completed.

  4. Review the results, and note any item where the wizard found a problem.

  5. Click Continue if you need to go to the Office Online Web site for additional help and tools.

  6. If no cause was found for the problem you’re having, and if the Office Online Web site didn’t offer a solution, try using the tools in Windows to diagnose and solve your problem and to run full scans for viruses, spyware, and other malware.

Running the diagnostics can take a long time, so make sure that you won’t need to use your computer immediately after you start the diagnostics.
