Android Browser Navigation

Browsers on phones don’t give you a lot of screen real estate, so you can’t easily do things like use tabs for browsing. When you tap to launch the Browser app Image on your 10-inch or larger tablet, you’ll see that your browsing experience starts to resemble what you expect when browsing on a laptop. Figure 12–1 shows the basics of navigating the Browser app in Android.

Multiple-tab browsing means you can quickly navigate between tabs. However, adding too many tabs will cause them to start scrolling off the screen, and you won’t be able to navigate between them as quickly. You can see the Back, Forward, and Refresh buttons in the upper left. You can navigate within most pages using the standard gestures, such as dragging to scroll, pinching to zoom, and spreading two fingers apart to zoom out.

NOTE: Smaller tablets that run an earlier version of Android—such as the Nook Color, the HTC Flyer, and the original Samsung Galaxy Tab—use a non-tabbed version of the Browser app that is designed for smaller screens. The Kindle Fire uses its own Silk Browser.

Finding a Website

To navigate to a new website, you can either open a new browser tab, or you can tap the URL of the existing tab and type in a new location, as shown in Figure 12–2.

But what if you don’t know the exact URL of the website you want to visit? No problem. Just type in a key phrase instead of a URL, and your browser will search the Web automatically. There is no separate search engine box, and there’s no reason to navigate to a search engine before simply searching.
