Getting Contacts from Your Old Planner to Google

If you're switching from your laptop to a tablet, you'll need to get your data transferred. The secret is to use Google wherever possible. If you sync the data with Google, you can get it on your tablet.

NOTE: If you can get the data to Google Contacts at www.google.com/contacts, it will appear on your phone. You can go through your phone and add contacts directly.

Follow these steps to sync your data from Outlook or the Apple Address Book:

  1. Export your contacts as a CSV or vCard file.
  2. Use the import link in the upper-right corner of Google Contacts, as shown in Figure 4–6.

Fine Tuning Your Tablet Sync

When you add Google Accounts, you choose how much information you want to sync, as shown in Figure 4–7. You may not want to check your work mail on your tablet; or you may want to read your email, but ignore the contact list. It's your choice.

You'll be asked to verify your syncing options whenever you add or create a Google Account, but you can also go through and change them at any time. Follow these steps to change your settings for a given account:

  1. Tap the Notification bar in the bottom-right corner of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Settings twice, just as you do to add an account.
  3. Navigate to Accounts & Sync in the Settings menu.
  4. Click the account you'd like to modify.

Now that you've set up your Google Accounts, it's time to explore other types of accounts in the next chapter.
