Chapter 8

Email on Tablets

Android tablets add a new ease to keeping up with your email. The relatively large screen makes it easy to see what you’re doing, and the Honeycomb interface makes it easy to see and respond to your messages.

Some tablets may package additional software, but in general your email is handled by two apps:

  • Gmail
  • Email

Between those two apps, you can read Microsoft Exchange, POP3, Gmail, and IMAP accounts. You can also use Android’s Browser app to check web-based email accounts, and you can download third-party apps that support other types of email accounts. Refer to Chapter 4: “Syncing with Google Accounts” to see how to add Gmail accounts to your Android tablet and Chapter 5: “Syncing with Other Accounts” for instructions on adding Exchange, IMAP, and POP3 email accounts.

Honeycomb tablets also come with interactive widgets for both the Email and Gmail apps, so you can check your message summaries at a glance before launching the full app. Chapter 7: “Widgets and the Home Screens” explains how to add and resize the Email and Gmail widgets.
