Copy, Cut, and Paste

Now that you're reasonably fast at typing and have a user dictionary full of words, it's time to save even more data entry time. You can copy and paste between documents or even between apps.

The key to doing any copy and pasting in Honeycomb is simply to long-press in a text entry area. This will invoke the green Text selection menu on the top of the screen, as shown on left.

You'll also see an insertion point or two selection points, depending on whether you've already copied some text.

Once you've invoked the Text selection menu, you need to either select some text or select an insertion point to paste some text. Figure 3–6 illustrates the concept.

Follow these steps to copy and paste some text in Honeycomb:

  1. Long-press in a text entry area until you see the Text selection menu.
  2. Slide the start and end points around the word or words you wish to copy. The text you've selected will be highlighted in green.
  3. Tap Cut if you want to copy and remove the text from the current location; tap Copy if you just want to copy it.
  4. Navigate to the place where you want to insert your text. It can be in the same document, in another document, or even in another app.
  5. Long-press to invoke the text entry area.
  6. Because you have an item in your clipboard, you'll see an insertion point by default and a Paste button will appear above the insertion point. Tap it and your text will be pasted into the selected insertion point.
