Board Games

The Internet is breathing new life into classic board games, and not just checkers and chess. Of course, you can play checkers and chess if you want to. But you can also play poker, solitaire, and just about any other card game you can imagine. Some involve other players, and some allow you to play opponents on the Internet.

Gameloft makes a licensed version of the Mattel classic Uno for US $2.99. The Uno app allows you to play with other online players around the world.

Electronic Arts makes the officially licensed version of Scrabble. This free game, shown to the left, allows you to play the popular word puzzle game on your tablet.

You can test your wits and luck against strangers, play friends from a list of contacts, or play against computer-generated opponents. Play can occur on many different platforms, so you don’t need to restrict yourself to just players with tablets.

Games can sometimes take a long time to play online, but you can quit and nudge each other to make the next move.

Another Scrabble-like variation is the popular Zynga game called Words With Friends, which allows you to challenge your Facebook contacts.

NOTE: There are tons of Scrabble-like games, but there are also tons of cheating-app companions. Many apps will allow you to instantly find the word worth the most points for the space available. That takes the fun out of it, so I tend to play only friends I know won’t cheat.
