Using Your Tablet for Art

One big advantage tablets have over phones is their extra screen real estate. Tablets have enough space to really allow you to finger paint or use a capacitive stylus accessory to draw on the screen. For example, the Autodesk SketchBook app comes in both free and US $4.99 Pro versions (see Figure 20–15).

SketchBook offers features you’d expect to find in a desktop-drawing app. It supports layers, a large selection of naturalistic brushes, and the ability to import photos.

NOTE: If you want a stylus to use with most Android tablets, you’ll need to find a capacitive stylus designed for use with phones and tablets. A stylus marketed for iPads will work fine. The important part is that this stylus must allow the small electrical charge from your fingers to transfer to the tablet. Styluses for Nintendo DS or similar devices won’t work with most Android tablets. Those are designed for resistive screens, where an electrical charge isn’t necessary.
