There are two basic ways to access Gmail from your tablet. You can either use the Gmail app , or you can use Android’s Browser app to access Gmail from the Web.
The Gmail app on Android tablets uses push email. That means that you don’t need to keep checking for new email. Your email is always on and always ready to receive new messages. This is just like keeping your desktop email client on in the background when you use your laptop. It’s the big advantage of Android’s Gmail app over your tablet’s Browser app, though the Browser app is useful when you need to tweak settings.
NOTE: There are generally several ways to do anything in the Gmail app. Use whichever methods you prefer.
When new messages arrive, by default you’ll see a notice in the Notifications bar. You can tap a notification that appears to view the message in the Gmail app, or you can tap the Notifications bar to see a preview of the message, as shown in Figure 8–4. Notice that Gmail messages have an envelope with an “M” on it, while regular mail has a more traditional envelope.
