Edge Traversal

Yet another advantage of the Polycom RMX MCU is its capability to register with the Lync Edge Server and receive MRAS credentials. This enables any RMX VMR to provide remote and relay candidates for media relay during the ICE negotiation process, so remote Lync users can seamlessly join meetings hosted on the RMX.

Cisco’s MCUs are not directly capable of this Edge registration, so users must be on the internal network or VPN to connect to a Cisco MCU-hosted conference.

Note

Keep in mind that the Edge traversal discussed here is specific to enabling remote Lync endpoints to join a conference and that remote third-party endpoints are not capable of joining the meeting through a Lync Edge Server. Third-party vendors usually provide a similar border element to facilitate remote standards-based endpoints joining a meeting such as Polycom Video Border Proxy (VBP) or Cisco’s VCS Expressway (VCSe).

If an organization has deployed the B2BUA with Edge registration, it might be possible to connect a remote user to a Cisco MCU, but that feature is dependent on the OCS Enhanced Collaboration license key.
