Installing the Directory Synchronization Tool

The Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization tool can be downloaded directly from the Office 365 Portal. Several sets of administrative permissions are required for the user account that runs the tool:

• Local administrator permissions on the system where the Directory Synchronization tool will be installed

• Enterprise Administrator permissions in the Active Directory forest of which the system running the Directory Synchronization tool is a member

• Administrative permissions to the Lync Online/Office 365 tenant

Use the following procedure to download and install the Directory Synchronization tool on a system that has been prepared for this purpose:

1. Log on to the system using an account with local administrator permissions.

2. Open a web browser, and log on to the Office 365 Portal.

3. On the left side of the main page, click Users and groups.

4. At the top of the Users and Groups page, click on the Set Up link next to Active Directory synchronization.

5. At the Set up and manage Single sign-on page, under Install and configure the Directory Sync tool, click the Download button.

6. At the prompt, click Save, and then choose a local subdirectory to save the file to.

7. After the file has been downloaded, double-click on the dirsync.exe file to begin the installation.

8. At the Welcome screen, click Next.

9. At the Microsoft Software License Terms screen, read the license terms; then if you agree to the license terms, select the I Accept radio button and click Next.

10. At the Select Installation Folder screen, either keep the default installation folder path or specify an alternative path if desired, and then click Next.

11. After the installation is complete, click Next.

12. At the Finish screen, if the directory synchronization configuration will be performed right away, select the check box for Start Configuration Wizard Now. If the configuration will be performed later, deselect this check box. Click Finish to complete the installation.
