Preparing a System for the Directory Synchronization Tool

The Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool can be downloaded directly from the Office 365 portal. Before the tool is installed, there are specific requirements for the network as well as the system that will be used to run the tool.

The following requirements apply to the system that will be used to run the Directory Synchronization Tool:

• Supported operating systems are Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

• The system must be a member of an Active Directory domain, and the domain must be within the same forest as the domain that will be synchronized to Lync Online/Office 365.

• The system cannot be a domain controller.

• The system cannot be running Active Directory Federation Services.

• .NET Framework 3.0 or 3.5 must be installed.

• Windows PowerShell must be enabled.

Note

The system that runs directory synchronization contains sensitive information, and therefore from a security perspective it should be afforded the same amount of protection as a domain controller. Only individuals who are granted access to domain controller systems should be granted access to the system that runs directory synchronization.

The performance of the Directory Synchronization Tool is directly dependent on the size and complexity of Active Directory, as well as the hardware used for the system running the tool. Table 28.8 shows the minimum hardware requirements for the system that will be used to run directory synchronization in relation to the number of AD objects. By default, the Directory Synchronization Tool will install an instance of SQL Express to store the directory information. As noted in the table, if there are more than 50,000 Active Directory objects to be synchronized, a full instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 is required.
