Planning the SIP Namespace

A key decision in the Lync Online planning process is the SIP namespace that will be used for Lync Online users. The deciding factor in this decision, however, is typically very simple: To provide a seamless UC experience for users, the SIP namespace used for Lync Online must match the primary SMTP namespace used with the organization’s messaging system. Since most organizations that sign up for Lync Online already have an established primary SMTP namespace for use with their existing messaging system, this same namespace is also specified as the Lync Online SIP domain. Multiple domains can also be added and used with Lync Online if this is necessary.

Tip

A good example of the importance of matching the namespace between Lync Online and the messaging system is seen in the interaction between the Lync client and the Outlook client when a new online meeting is created. When Lync is installed on a system where Outlook is installed, the Online Meeting Add-in for Lync is automatically enabled, and is used to allow quick scheduling of online meetings from the Outlook client. When the user creates a new meeting request, the Outlook client attempts to redirect to Lync Online using the user’s SMTP address to create the meeting request. If the SMTP address does not match the SIP address, the online meeting request fails. In a circumstance in which it is not possible to match the SIP and SMTP namespaces, users are forced to use the Lync Web Scheduler to create online meetings instead of Outlook.

After the SIP namespace has been determined, the SIP domain name is entered into the Office 365 portal as part of the initial setup process.
