Planning for Directory Synchronization

Directory synchronization is an important feature for organizations that use Active Directory, because it enables Active Directory user and group accounts to be synchronized to Office 365. For most organizations, it makes sense to use directory synchronization in tandem with SSO, because the combination of SSO and directory synchronization creates a seamless experience for Lync Online users. Although it is possible to configure directory synchronization without SSO, this would result in two sets of credentials to manage, and is therefore recommended only for small organizations.

Directory synchronization with Office 365 is made possible using the Microsoft Online Services Directory Synchronization Tool, which can be used to synchronize up to 50,000 objects. The following sections provide the necessary planning details to ensure that directory synchronization with Lync Online/Office 365 functions smoothly.

Note

Directory synchronization with Office 365 should be considered a long-term commitment, particularly since the synchronized objects can be edited only with the on-premise tools.
