Architecture Overview

Lync Web App is built around two core components:

JavaScript-Powered HTML User Interface—This interface is responsible for rendering most of the UI. It was designed to work on many platforms.

Native UI—The Native UI is responsible for rendering audio, video, and screen sharing during meetings.

Figure 26.2 outlines the logical separation of these components.

Lync Web App communicates directly with Unified Communications Web API (UCWA), which is a new API introduced with Lync Server 2013 enabling applications to leverage Lync functionality in a web browser. UCWA will communicate to the Lync Conferencing Servers to establish signaling sessions. The Lync Native UI, which is the plugin-based UI, will talk to the media stack on the Lync Servers for audio, video, and application/desktop-sharing functionality.
