Chapter 24. Mobile Clients

In an increasingly mobile world, a Unified Communications solution must be able to provide a seamless user experience across all devices, including mobile endpoints. In recent years it is common for users to be outside of the office more than they are inside the office. Mobile workers typically rely on cellphones for communication, and with the recent influx of tablet devices, getting work done when mobile is an everyday experience. Microsoft introduced mobile client experience with Office Communications Server on the Windows Mobile Platform. In Lync Server 2010 this mobile experience was enhanced and introduced to all major cellphone platforms. This includes Windows Phone, Android, Apple iOS, and Nokia Symbian. Additionally, Blackberry devices have always had a mobile experience provided through Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) integration with OCS and Lync.

This chapter provides an overview of the Lync Server 2013 mobile experience, including a feature comparison across versions and platforms. Additionally, a technical review of the Mobility architecture, including critical services and protocol flows, is covered. Lastly, steps to deploy and maintain Lync Server 2013 Mobile Services are explained.
