Planning AD FS Hardware

Server virtualization platforms are supported for both the federation server and the federation server proxy roles. The hardware and software requirements for federation server and federation server proxy systems are the same. For either type of system, the following hardware minimums apply:

• Operating systems—Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2

• CPU speed—single-core 1GHz

• RAM—1GB

• Disk space—50MB

These minimum specifications should be used only as a starting point for resource allocation. To increase capacity, additional RAM and CPU can be added, or the number of servers can be increased. For example, the capacity planning guidelines listed in Table 28.7 are based on the following hardware specifications:

• CPU speed—dual quad core 2.27GHz CPU (eight cores total)

• RAM—4GB
