Persistent Chat Server Options

Lync Server 2013 provides the capability to create a set of server options that can be applied globally to all Persistent Chat pools, or alternatively these same server options can be applied to a specific site or pool. There is only one global configuration, which is automatically created when Persistent Chat is deployed, and is simply named Global. This default Global configuration contains default settings that can be changed as needed, but the configuration itself cannot be deleted. A configuration that is applied at the pool or site level overrides the same settings that are configured at the global level. Persistent Chat server option settings include the following:

Default Chat History—The number of chat messages that are immediately available for each chat room upon first request (the global default is 30 chat messages).

Maximum File Size (KB)—The maximum size of a file that can be uploaded to or downloaded from a room (the global default is 20MB).


Note

The Maximum file size setting applies only in environments that include legacy Group Chat clients, since these are the only clients that can post files to a chat room. The Lync Server 2013 Persistent Chat client does not have file upload/download capability, and therefore this setting does not have any effect on a native Lync Server 2013 environment.


Participant Update Limit—The maximum number of participants in a given room for which Persistent Chat will send roster updates (the global default is 75). Roster updates are used to inform connected clients about who is present in the chat room.

Room Management URL—The URL used for custom chat room management. This is an optional setting that allows the use of a custom room management solution. For example, an organization can develop their own web application used to manage Lync chat rooms. If the URL for the custom web application is specified as the room management URL within the Persistent Chat options, then users will be redirected to the custom room management site when they create or manage a chat room using the Lync client.

Use the following steps for creating and applying server options to a specific Persistent Chat pool:

1. Log on to a system where the Lync administrative tools are installed using an account that is a member of the CsAdministrator or CsPersistentChatAdministrator security groups, and open the Lync Server Control Panel.

2. In the left pane, select Persistent Chat, and then click the Persistent Chat Configuration tab at the top.

3. From the New drop-down menu, select Pool Configuration.

4. At the Select a Service dialog box, select the Persistent Chat service from the list and click OK.

5. The New Persistent Chat Configuration screen now appears. The name for the configuration is automatically chosen based on the name of the Persistent Chat pool, as shown in Figure 10.8.

6. The Default chat history, Maximum file size, and Participant update limit fields are automatically populated with the same default values used in the Global policy. Enter new values for these fields to meet the Persistent Chat requirements of the pool.

7. If a custom room management site will be used, enter the URL for the site in the Room management URL field.

8. When finished, click Commit to save the configuration.
