What about Inclusion?

Achieving workforce diversity is only part of the picture for managers. As one HR expert described, diversity is similar to finding people for a choir who have different musical backgrounds, vocal talents, and abilities. To make that choir the best it can be, however, you have to “make sure that those different voices are heard and valued and that they contribute to the performance.”91 That’s the idea behind D&I—diversity and inclusion. Inclusion is defined as “the achievement of a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, have equal opportunities and resources, and can contribute fully to the organization’s success.92 So, it’s not just a matter of getting diverse people in the organization, it’s giving them the opportunities to contribute and show that their contributions are valued and important to the organization. And that’s an important responsibility for organizational leaders.93
