MIDI Record Filter

There are times when you really don’t want to record everything coming into your MIDI ports. Often MIDI is used for many other tasks such as mixer automation and remote control, synchronization, and patch changing. If any of this data is coming in on the same ports that you use to record, it might be necessary to filter out that data so that it does not get recorded.

The MIDI record filter is found in Preferences > MIDI. (See Figure 8.20.) You have the ability to filter various types of MIDI data from the stream before recording it. Individual controllers can be excluded so that they may be used for other purposes without disrupting the recording process. Often system-exclusive messages are not necessary for recording musical performances but can be used to archive settings of external devices for later recall. You may specify a certain MIDI channel for data that should not be recorded and filter that channel out of the stream.

Of course, it is possible to remove erroneous data from the recorded MIDI track later using the logical editor. This will be covered in Part III, “Editing.”
