Basic Mix Routing

Okay, so Control Room is set up and you want to get mixing. If the project is not already set up this way, simply route all channels in the mixer to one stereo main VST Output. When you are using Control Room features to monitor your mix, it is not necessary to actually connect the Main Mix VST Output to a physical audio interface channel (device port). That is handled by Control Room. The VST Output acts as a virtual mix bus that will be used to export a final audio file when your mix is complete.

Your VST Outputs tab should look like Figure 13.8.

Since Stereo Out is designated the Main Mix, it will be routed to the Control Room channel where you can choose which Monitor (speaker set) to listen to, and that’s how you hear the virtual mix bus.

Nuendo’s mixer offers some quick ways of routing many channels at once. Using Shift+[Alt/ Option], you can route all selected channels to the same output at once.

1. Select all the channels in the mixer.

2. Press Shift+Alt while choosing an output for one of the selected channels.

3. All output designations for the selected tracks should now be the same.

This technique comes in handy when using a great deal of submixing and multiple outputs in a mix with more complex routing.

For the current example, your mixer should look something like that shown in Figure 13.9.

Now you can blend and pan all the signals together to create a rough mix of everything. Now some of the fun begins.
