General Insurance

Any insurance which is not life (non-life) insurance comes under general insurance. Some of the examples are:

  • Travel insurance: This type of insurance is bought by people who are traveling. This may be domestic or international travel. The insurance will cover any loss which a traveler might face during the travel, such as loss of baggage, medical expenses, and so on. Travel insurance can be sought by an individual for his personal coverage or for covering entire family.
  • Marine insurance: This type of insurance is mainly bought to protect from loss or accidental damage to ships, cargo. The insurance usually covers this from the point of origin to the destination.
  • Fire insurance: As the name suggests, this insurance will cover the damages in event of damage due to fire. This is usually purchased in addition to property insurance and will cover the cost of repairs or reconstruction.
  • Property insurance: As the name suggests, this type of insurance policy covers damage incurred to a property due to natural calamity, like flood, earthquake, or any such mishap.
  • Motor insurance: Motor insurance is purchased for road vehicles-two wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, trucks, and buses. The insurance is to cover damage due to accidents, collisions, thefts, or natural calamities
  • Health insurance: Health insurance is purchased by the insured to cover expenses that may occur due to health related issue, hospitalization, and surgery related expenses. The health insurance can be bought by an individual or it can be bought for the entire family. There are health insurance polices available which cover critical illnesses. The health insurance policy can also be bought by a corporate to cover health of its employees.
