Challenges with traditional reporting

Traditional systems are better than manual systems. They are not people dependent and the reasons why a company is looking for a new solution will vary.

Most of the traditional systems are query based systems. Over time, as data size grows, the query based tool takes more time to fetch data and a report which used to take few seconds to open starts taking several minutes to open. The business users will not have too much patience to wait for a report to open. Assuming that they do wait for a report to open, once they see the report, they may need to open a few more reports to start analyzing. If the overall time shoots up, the business users are unlikely to use the systems.

Businesses have become dynamic. The traditional dashboards were developed when requirements were different. As time progresses, business users' requirements change, too. Traditional systems are complex and heavily IT dependent. The change request may take several weeks or months to develop, and by the time the reports are ready, it's likely that the requirements have changed again.

Business users today consider mobility an important parameter. Many of the business applications are available on mobile, and this improves productivity. The users expect analytics to also be available on mobile. The traditional systems may not be capable of delivery analytics over mobile. In case some of them do, any changes needed by business users consumes humongous time.

Self-service and advanced analytics are becoming important for the users, too, and so the companies are looking out for newer systems.

The consultant must be aware of all the factors which are making the companies change to newer system, and prepare accordingly.
