Core competency 1: Business acumen

Business analysis requires an understanding of fundamental business principles and best practices in order to ensure they are considered as solutions and reviewed. 

Business acumen refers to the requirement for a business analyst to have a fundamental understanding of business principles. This is so that the business analyst is able to consider these principles when working with stakeholders to develop solutions to business needs. As the business analyst becomes more experienced and knowledgeable, their level of business acumen develops and becomes more valuable and complete. Having a strong business acumen enables the business analyst to operate within different organizations, applying common business principles and knowledge gained from past experiences.

Let's consider a real-world scenario.

A business analyst worked on an initiative within a finance department in the automotive industry. They gained business acumen around the financial processes and systems used. When they then chose to move to a new industry but stayed within the financial arena, they had strong business acumen within the area of finance and were able to add value to their new role by applying their business acumen capabilities.
