Understanding the employer's point of view

Let's look at the perspective of the employer when it comes to salary increases. You may have heard this saying: "You are only paid enough to keep you in the role you are in…", or something along those lines. This tells me that it is all about your perception of your own value that you bring to the organization (and not that of the employer). The employer will not offer you a higher salary than what you are willing to work for, regardless of their personal opinion about your value to the organization. If you don't believe you are worth more, no one will believe that. That applies to any situation in life, not just this scenario.

But don't blame the employer. It makes good business sense to keep your costs as low as possible and revenue as high as possible. If they didn't follow this principle as a rule in business, not many businesses would survive.

So, where does this leave you? We will get to that later in this chapter.

However, before you start worrying about how you will go about getting a salary increase, let's first understand the deeper reasons: your personal "why" you want a salary increase.
