Key things to know when using this technique

Business rules and policies govern the day-to-day operation of an organization at different levels of the organization. These policies and rules also play a key role in business decision-making.

There is a difference between business rules and business policies.

Business policies are a general directive that an overall organization or business unit has to adhere too. They control, influence, and regulate the activities of the organization and its people. Business rules are different from business policies in that they are specific, testable directives that play the role of criteria for making decisions, guiding judgments, and guiding behavior.

There are two types of business rules, which are as follows:

  • Definitional rules: This type of business rule is either true or untrue and can often be calculated.

An example of this type of rule is that a product must be considered a well-selling product if more than 25 units of that product are sold per month.

  • Behavioral rules: Behavioral rules are rules that people should follow when performing a particular task. These rules are often a policy that must be adhered to.

An example of this type of rule is that an order must not be placed if the customer is not registered as a supplier with the organization.
