Being of value

Let's take a step back and consider this analogy. Imagine you are the customer of a small coffee shop down the street. You go past there every morning to get your coffee and your smile from the barista every morning. Technically, you only pay for the coffee, yet you go to that coffee shop because of the extra free smile you get when you pick up your coffee. It makes you feel good. The barista smiles because he loves his customers and the service he provides; he feels proud of his coffee and the freedom his business gives him. So, he smiles easily. It is not fake or insincere at all.

One day you get to the office and a colleague tells you that he went to get his coffee at this same small coffee shop but realized only after the coffee was made that he forgot his money. The barista laughed and said: "No problem. You pay me next time," and laughed some more. Your colleague said it was unexpected, and the barista changed an embarrassing situation into a beautiful moment of trust. Your colleague told everyone else in the office too.

The barista understands the true meaning of giving value—sincerely. An indirect benefit of doing this one good deed would have made so many more workers aware of the barista's existence, and they would have flocked to his coffee shop as a result.

As a Business Analyst who now has a CCBA® or CBAP® designation, you must start your journey toward a pay increase with the sincerity and perspective of the barista. You should do your job plus more, and you should trust and build relationships without expecting more. This should be your baseline position before anything else.
