BOLD/BOLDFACE
ˈbōl(d)/ˈbōl(d)-ˌfās, n
A typeface in which letterforms have
heavier stroke weights than those used for
the “regular” version of the same typeface.
Desktop publishing applications typically offer
a tool that “toggles” bold type, which merely
thickens the stroke of the current typeface.
True bold type, on the other hand, is designed
to be proportional to other “members” of the
same type family, resulting in an appealing
“family resemblance” when printed.

BLEED
lēd, n
The portion of a design element, such as a
printed image, line of type, fi eld of color, etc.,
that extends beyond the actual page size. Trim
marks are used to indicate the actual page
size; anything printed outside of these marks
will “bleed” off the page. The size required for
a bleed will depend upon the accuracy of the
printing press and the trimming equipment.
