HALFTONE
ˈhaf-ˌtōn, n
A grayscale image in which the full tonal
range has been converted into a grid of tiny
black dots, or halftone screens. Darker areas
of the image are represented by patches
of larger dots than those used to represent
lighter areas of the image. Halftones corre-
sponding to each channel are combined to
simulate the full spectrum of visible color in
four-color process printing. The same prin-
ciple can also be scaled-up, using halftones
to create interesting visual effects.

H&J
Abbreviation for Hyphenation & Justifi cation,
the process by which software applications
ll lines with type. Regardless of whether a
block of text is aligned ush-left, ush-right,
justifi ed, or centered, the software automati-
cally fi lls each line across the entire length of
its measure with a combination of characters
and spaces. This is called justifi cation (a term
commonly used to describe only those lines
of type that completely fi ll their measure).
Hyphenation refers to the breaking of words
in such a way that each line of type can be
more completely fi lled. Advanced page-
layout applications allow for a number of H&J
parameters to be adjusted, thereby giving the
designer the fl exibility necessary to create
ne typography. See also justifi ed type.

ˈgə-tər, n
The space between two columns of type, or,
more generally, between any two columns in
a layout. Sometimes also used to describe
the narrow strip of a page nearest its binding
edge, or the area where two such strips meet
in a spread.
