RHYTHM
ˈri-thəm, n
Visual repetition created through underlying
structural patterns within and among various
design elements, such as type, lines, and
shapes. A single line of type, for example,
might have a particular rhythm by way of its
many vertical strokes, created through careful
letter spacing. Posters and book covers
often use geometric patterns to create a sta-
ble rhythm against which surprising elements
can then be played up. And on an even larger
scale, grids can be used to provide a gentle
rhythm throughout a lengthy publication,
carrying the reader along.
