TRAPPING

A technique used to prevent gaps between
areas of color when registration is imperfect.
If, for example, magenta type were printed
against a background of pure cyan, any
misregistration would result in a gap between
the type and the background, exposing the
unprinted paper beneath. A trap is a very thin
line of color, in this case a combination of ma-
genta and cyan, created around an object to
prevent such gaps. There are several types of
traps; which one is most suitable for a given
printing situation depends on several factors,
and in most cases, is best handled by the

TRACKING
ˈtra-kiŋ, n
A measure of how tightly or loosely a line of
type is set. Increasing the tracking increases
the overall spacing of the type by increasing
the spaces between characters proportion-
ally. Decreasing the tracking has the reverse
effect. Letter spacing refers broadly to
the spacing between characters; tracking
quantifi es it.

TINT
ˈtint, n
A term used to describe a color created by
adjusting its brightness by adding white to
it. Darkening a color’s brightness by adding
black results in a shade of that hue. Tint is
also used when referring to the density of
dots on the halftone screens used in four-
color printing. An area of the cyan screen
covered 60 percent with dots is said to be
a 60 percent tint.
