STANDING CAPITAL/CAP

An uppercase letter used as the initial letter
of the fi rst word in a paragraph, set in a point
size larger than the surrounding type but
along the same baseline. For additional im-
pact, standing caps may be set in a typeface
much different from that used for the body

SMALL CAPITALS/CAPS

Uppercase letters having proportions and
stroke weight that make them compatible
with a typeface’s lowercase letters. Small
caps are used within a line of type for the
same reason lining numerals are used:
because they are less obtrusive than the
alternative. When referring to an acronym in
mid-sentence, for example, a string of capital
letters would be distracting. Another advan-
tage of small caps is that their proportions
allow for legibility even at small sizes.
