ACCORDION FOLD
ə-ˈkȯ r-dē-ən fōld, n
Alternating folds made to a sheet of paper
such that each of the panels (of which there
are six or more) bends in a direction opposite
to its adjacent panels. Two folds in this man-
ner yield a six-panel (or six-page) accordion
(three panels on each side of the sheet); three
folds make an eight-panel accordion, and so
on. Also called concertina.

ALIASING
ˈā-lē-ə-siŋ, n
ANTI-ALIASING
ˈan-tī-ˈā-lē-ə-siŋ, n
Aliasing occurs when the resolution of a
bitmap image is exceeded by that of the
device used to display or print it. An image
with a resolution of 72 samples per inch (or
spi), for example, will exhibit aliasing when
printed full-size at 300 dots per inch (dpi),
resulting in a noticeable “stair-step” pattern.
Anti-aliasing is a technique employed by
digital image-editing software for minimiz-
ing the distortion caused by aliasing. This
is accomplished through a slight blurring of
the image, which softens the sharp edges
of the stair steps. Although some quality is
sacrifi ced in the process, it is often prefer-
able to aliasing.

ALIGNMENT
ə-ˈlīn-mənt, n
Alignment refers to the arrangement of
multiple design elements, such as images
and type, relative to one another. Elements
are often aligned such that their edges (left,
right, upper, or lower) or centerlines (hori-
zontal or vertical) correspond to a common
reference line, which is often part of a grid.
Alignment can also refer to the arrange-
ment of type within a block of type. See
also ush-left, ush-right, centered type,
and justifi ed type.
