SCALE
ˈskāl, n
The perceived size or weight of one design
element relative to others in the same layout.
Scale can come down to easily measured
differences, as when larger type is used to
indicate which parts of a text are of greater
importance. Often, however, differences in
scale are far subtler. Objects with dissimilar
shapes, for example, tend to convey a differ-
ent scale even when they measure the same
area, geometrically. Shape and color also
infl uence the scale of an element, as does
context; the scale of an object is a function
of its surroundings.
