EMBOSS
im-ˈbäs, n
Creating an impression in paper by pressing
it between two metal dies, one raised and
the other recessed. When the impression is
raised above the surface of the paper, it is
called an emboss; when the impression is be-
low the paper’s surface, it is called a deboss.
Medium-weight papers, especially those with
textured fi nishes, tend to work best. Printed
images and foil stamps are often used
as embellishments, although they are not
required. Embossing done without them is
called blind embossing.

EM DASH
ˈem ˌdash, n
A dash the length of one em used to create a
pause in a line of text, especially to set off a
parenthetical phrase. When it comes to using
a space before and after an em dash, prac-
tices vary, although most publications prefer
to go without. See also en dash and hyphen.
