SWASH CHARACTERS
ˈswäsh ˈker-ik-tərz, n
Highly decorative characters with extended
strokes, often capitals slanted to the right.
As capitals, swash characters are typically
used as the initial letter of the fi rst word in
a paragraph, often set in a point size larger
than the surrounding type. As lowercase
letters, swashes are generally used at the
opposite end of the paragraph: for the
nal letter in the fi nal word of a sentence.
Although swashes can give a block of text
a sense of elegance, they should be used
sparingly. A line of type set all in swashes,
for example, is both distracting and illegible.

SURREALISM
sə-ˈrē-ə-ˌli-zəm, n
A European art movement of the 1920s and
1930s concerned with intuition, dreams,
and the unconscious mind, often expressed
through surprising or unsettling juxtaposi-
tions, optical illusions, and obvious violations
of the laws of physics. Graphic design-
ers found inspiration not only in the many
techniques used by the Surrealists but also
in their experimental approach to depicting
three-dimensional space.

SUPERSCRIPT
ˈsü-pər-ˌskript, n
As with subscripts, superscripts are specially
scaled characters smaller than the main text
with which they are set. However, the place-
ment of superscripts, also called superiors,
depends upon their purpose. As numerals
to indicate footnotes or the numerator of a
fraction, superscripts are top-aligned along
the ascent line. In mathematical or scientifi c
expressions, they are center-aligned instead.
Lowercase letters are also sometimes used
as top-aligned superscripts, but rarely in
English. The English ordinals commonly used
to indicate dates (e.g., 4th of July) are often
set as superscripts, although they are more
properly set as standard lowercase letters.
