For a given typeface, the height of the lower-
case letters that have neither ascenders nor

the mean line. At small point sizes, typefaces
with large x-heights generally provide greater
readability than comparable typefaces with
smaller x-heights.

WIDOW
ˈwi-(ˌ)dō, n
A very short fi nal line of a paragraph, often
a single word, that creates the appearance
of a space between paragraphs when one
doesn’t exist. As with orphans, widows can
be avoided through several techniques, the
most common of which are letter spacing
and hyphenation. See also H&J and text

WHITE SPACE
ˈwhīt ˈspās, n
A generic term used to describe those areas
of a layout left “blank,” whether or not they
are actually white in color. However, white
space is as integral to a successful design
as the design elements it contains; it is ac-
tive, not passive. Indeed, the effective use of
white space creates structure and maintains
a sense of rhythm and balance throughout
a layout in much the same way that the inter-
play of positive space and negative space
energizes the relationships among design
elements. See also grid.
