ICON
ˈī-ˌkän, n
A graphical sign that looks like what it signi-
es. The printer icon on a computer screen,
for example, looks like a printer, even if it is
a generic one. Other examples include the
cigarette graphic used on No Smoking signs,
and the suitcase icon used for airport baggage
claim signage. In both cases, the icons look
like what they represent, which is what makes
them easily recognizable, even across lan-
guage and cultural barriers. See also symbol
and pictogram.

HYPHEN
ˈhī-fən, n
A punctuation mark often confused with the
en dash and em dash, the hyphen is shorter

and serves a different purpose. In English, the
hyphen is used to indicate the two parts of a
word broken across a line break, and to cre-
ate compound words, such as three-quarters,
xed-rate mortgage, and Asian-American.
